Social Media and SEO
You Can’t Separate Social Media and SEO
I found a great article on Conversation Marketing about Social Media and SEO. The writers’ point of view is you can not separate Social Media and SEO, period. And for the most part I agree, that are so intertwined today that it would take an act of god (or Obama for some) to untangle them.
My only complaint with the article is the writer doesn’t go into great detail on how to use Social Media for SEO. I have my own means, and the quick and dirty way is:
Create a Blog
I don’t care what your website is about, you can always use a blog. Every website should have some news or something to say. Otherwise, what is the point of the website. If your not updating your content, then you really don’t care about SEO and your page rank anyway. If you are one of those people, I’m surprised you made it this far, but you can just stop reading now and go back to Al’s Joke Page.
Create a Facebook and/or MySpace Account
I know this may sound dumb, but go find your friends you lost years ago when you decided to become a web developer. Find out what they have done in the past years, and let them know what you have done as well, give them a link to your website. Ask them to bookmark it, and if they are a close friend, add a link to it on their page. If, for some strange reason, they actually know something about what your talking about on your website, tell them to go read it, and if it’s a blog, to go comment on it. But all in all, reconnect with the outside world, but in a safe way, behind a computer screen. But never let on that you are using those people to raise your SEPR.
Twitter and the rest of ‘em
Go get an account with Twitter and Plurk and any other mildly successful text messaging website. No need to really update any profiles here, just find some friends, follow them, and hope they follow you. Post a link to your website on each one of these, and every time you create a new blog post, tweet it as well. It’s so simple it’s almost fun. You may even find some interesting things when following someone else. Better yet, you may find a girl/boy with the same interests as you, then you can send CSS Hearts to each other.
More Link Building
The writer does say:
Authority comes from links. I dare you to carry out a successful link campaign without bloggers and sites like Digg, Stumbleupon and all those other communities we spam on a weekly basis, begging folks for just one vote.
And this I must agree upon. You may be thinking, there’s no way I could ever make it to the first page on Digg, but you don’t have to! Just get your link in Digg and be happy about it! If you were on the first page of Digg you would most likely have bigger problems. Your server would crash from the overload; you would windup paying too much money for your hosting package, because your readers would most likely drop off within a month to go to the next big thing. Build your community of followers that care about what you talk about. You don’t need the mindless drones that just click on something because everyone else clicked on it.
This should get anyone started in the world of Social Media and SEO. Like I said, it’s my quick and dirty way of doing things. If you have other ideas that you would like to share, let me know, or if you disagree with anything I’ve said, I guess we can talk about that as well.
