Make Your Website iPhone Compatible

by John Nemec on September 7th, 2009

Have you ever wondered how to create one of those cool little icons for you iPhone home screen and have a good looking mobile site as well? It’s very simple to do, and even easier with WordPress. Two quick and easy things you can do to make your blog accessible to more people are create a mobile version of your site and create a custom icon for the iPhone home screen.

First, to create a quick and easy but good looking version of your WordPress blog for the iPhone, as well as all the other modern phones out there, you need to install the WPtouch iPhone Theme.

It’s a painless plugin to install. After installation I simply went into the Settings->WPtouch option and configured a few things. For me there was not much to change, I just added my Adsence information and activated the contact page. It’s really self explanatory, so just open it up and take a look. If you have any questions, send me a message and I’ll try to help you the best I can.

Now my site looks good on the iPhone and I’m assuming the site looks good on the Blackberry and other phones but I do not own one and don’t have one that is easily accessible to me. If you have another type of phone, please take a look at JohnNemec.com and let me know how it looks.

If for some reason that doesn’t work there is another nice WordPress plugin you can grab to do this job as well called iPhone Webclip Manager. You simply install this plugin and in the Settings->Webclips section put the path of your icon that you’ve already uploaded to your server.

With these two simple things you can open your WordPress blog up to a whole new world of readers. Want to test out what you just read?

  • Open JohnNemec.com in your iPhone browser
  • tap the ‘+’ button located on the bottom center part of your screen
  • Select ‘Add to Home Screen’
  • Name the icon whatever you want, I found that John Nemec works well, and select ‘Add’
