Force Quit An iPhone Application

by John Nemec on October 20th, 2009

iphone-buttonsEvery once in a while when I’m working, or playing, the application I’m using on my iPhone will lock up. Not normally, but it does happen. And when it does lock up I find myself stuck, unable to use the iPhone at all. Some people have told me “you have to wait until the battery dies to reset the system”, but I’ve found a better way, the Force Quit.

To Force Quite a frozen application, simply hold down the “Home” button for about 6 seconds until it quits the program and takes you to the Home Screen. So far this handy trick hasn’t failed me yet. I’m sure now that I’ve posted this my iPhone will lock up where it wont work for me, but until now it’s been my savior.

So next time your testing out a new application on your iPhone and for whatever reason it locks up, don’t panic. Just hold the “Home” button down, while holding your breath, and you should be able to Force Quit your way back to the Home Screen.

  1. Safari has crashed and froze up on me more than once. Not even holding the Home button down for 6 seconds, 15 seconds, or 30 seconds worked. I tried the Sleep button, I held down both Home and Sleep, I plugged my iPhone in my computer, and I even popped out the SIM card thinking that would do something. Nope. I had to let the battery die down.
