After multiple mermaid sightings off the coast, the Israeli city of Kiryat Yam is offering a $1 million prize to whoever can provide proof for the existence of a mermaid off the northern city’s shores.

Reported by YNetNews.com:

The suggested prize has raised a lot of interest across the world, promoting international networks like CNN and Sky News to send television crews to Kiryat Yam to interview Mayor Shmuel Siso. The Municipality has also begun building a mermaid-shaped statue near the beach.

Apparently, there is an American organization that is upset with this offer. The Mermaid Medical Association in Brooklyn, New York dislikes the idea of a prize given for the proof of a Mermaid.  They said the offer “badly and outrageously damages the legendary mermaid legacy.”

The MMA has written a letter to the Israeli city of Kiryat Yam informing them that they have 10 days to rescind their offer of $1 million dollars or their organization would ask the International Court of Justice in Holland to intervene.
