Rombach Farms Pumpkin Patch

by John Nemec on October 21st, 2009

It’s that time of year again, where scaring the pants off of your children is not only fun, but acceptable. I got the privilege of doing this at Rombach’s Pumpkin Patch on our yearly trip to pick a pumpkin.

It was a cold Saturday morning when my wife, mother, and 2-year-old all went to Rombach’s Pumpkin Patch. The entire ride there I told my kid that he needed to keep his eyes open and to watch out for zombies. Zombies just happen to be his new ‘thing’. I don’t think he really knows what a zombie is, but for some reason he does find them to be scary.

I was always under the impression that we ‘learned’ things to be scary, but until this Halloween season he has never even heard of a zombies or ghosts before, but is now terrified of them. I have a stuffed skeleton Halloween prop that hangs on a door that if he come 3 feet from it will freeze up and scream. Also, we cant go to a store without him knowing exactly where the Halloween section is, so we can avoid it at all costs. This makes my life fun.

Rombach’s Farm has tons of Halloween props every year for the enjoyment of every father that is forced to go there with their wife and child. The fathers job is to carry a thirty pound pumpkin around the farm while the wife looks at apple butter and candles while drinking hot chocolate. Rombach’s kindly places mildly scary props everywhere so the father can have some fun scaring his children and forget about the strain on his back for a while.

By the time we got to Rombach’s my kid was truly scared, no matter what mom or grandma said, in the back of his mind he knew dad was right and there were going to be a lot of zombies there to eat him. And god bless those Rombach’s people, they out did themselves this year. There was a zombie on every corner. Some of them even moved.

Like I said before it was a cold Saturday morning so I didn’t think we would last very long, so I had to get in as much scaring as I could. I did give my son a little time off from the scaring to ride a pony (he really loves it), stare at caged animals, and to drink some hot chocolate, but as soon as that was over we went back through the haunted tunnel.

After a good hour of carrying pumpkins and scaring the crap out of my kid it was time to leave. But rest assured, we’ll be back next year to scare the crap out of my kid again. Until next year, keep up the good work Rombach’s.
