Kurt Cobain Finally Becomes A Guitar Hero
Nirvana fans rejoice or groan, on September 1st Kurt Cobain from the influential rock band Nirvana will join the cast of characters in Guitar Hero 5. Along with getting to ‘be’ one of greatest singer/songwriters of all time, you will also get to play two Nirvana tracks, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and a live version of “Lithium,” from Nirvana’s 1992 show at England’s Reading Festival.
According to RollingStone,
…securing the proper approvals was no small feat. Not only did Cobain’s widow Courtney Love have to sign off on behalf of the estate, so did former drummer Dave Grohl and Primary Wave Publishing, which administers the Nirvana catalog. “There’s a lot of moving parts to something like this,” Riley explains. “But it was about timing, not an issue of resistance. We almost did it for World Tour, but we couldn’t get it together. Then after three years of working with the different parties, it was like the perfect storm.”

The great debate has already begun whether Kurt Cobain would approve of this or not. I have mixed feelings about this. One I think this could be a good thing; it will potentially introduce early 90′s music to a whole new generation. On the other hand, is this what Kurt would have wanted with his legacy?
The bottom line is, Kurt Cobain is dead, and has no say in what happens to his music. That is left up to the remaining members of Nirvana, his widow Courtney Love and the millions of lawyers that must get involved in everything. IMHO Kurt threw away any rights to his music when he pulled the trigger.
It really bothers me when I hear people say, “Kurt would NEVER let that happen,” or “What about the music, that’s not why Kurt wrote it.” These people only knew Kurt Cobain through his music and whatever books they may have read, they don’t really ‘know’ him or what he would think about this. The funny thing is, I’ve never heard a close personal friend of Kurt’s come forward and say anything that Nirvana fans are crying about.
So go ahead and buy Guitar Hero 5 guilt free. Pretend to be Kurt Cobain and rock out to Teen Spirit. Then jump online and buy his flannel shirts while they last. And sit back, relax and remember when music was actually good.
