Drink Water Live Longer

by John Nemec on October 1st, 2009

My wife has been trying to get me to drink more water lately. She says that drinking water will help me to live longer and make my life all around more enjoyable. She wants me to drink at least 8 glasses a day, so to humor her I find the smallest cup we own and drink up. Normally she will roll her eyes and fill a tall Quick Trip cup and sternly says, “Drink”.

As usual, part of me really didn’t believe her. And as usual, she was right and I was wrong. I thought she was just buying into some strange wives tale she was told when she was young. I didn’t believe that water would be that much better for you than any other drink. When in fact coffee, my drink of choice, is made of water. Isn’t it just dirty water anyway? Why couldn’t I just get my water intake from coffee or any other liquid?

To answer my questions I jump online and found plenty of resources that explain how water is the best drink for you and what it can do to make you healthier. According to Dr. Jeffrey Griffiths of Tuft University School of Medicine and FreeDrinkingWater.com, much of the credit for our longer life spans can be attributed to clean drinking water and some of the effects, among others, include:

  • Reduces daytime fatigue
  • Improves memory
  • Nourishes skin
  • Helps remove toxins from your body
  • Regulates your body’s cooling system
  • Helps lubricate joints

So how much water should I actually drink? Well, according to the sites that I looked at, MayoClinic.com, About.com, RealAge.com, and NutritionDiva.com, there is no real consensus. But no one site suggests to drink 8 glasses a day. In fact, many say that myth is wrong, and what people drink is determined on a case-by-case basis. One site even said that people can get their daily intake of water without even drinking a glass at all, but rather they get it from the food they eat. And that brings me back to, what’s wrong with replacing water with coffee?

Bottom line for me is, water has no taste, water makes me pee, and many times water is not as easily accessible as other drinks. Drinking large amounts of water everyday may in fact extend my life, but I don’t want to spend that extended part of my life in the bathroom. So all you water advocates out there, you drink your water and I’ll enjoy my life.
