The Library in Historic Soulard
Posted by John Nemec in My Boring Life on September 30th, 2009
I visited a new music venue called The Library on Monday evening. They were holding an open house for all bands interested in playing in this new venue. The point of the open house was to meet and greet each band and allow the bands to network with each other as well as gather contact information from each band to help in the booking process.

Who's Who of St. Louis Bands in the Library
The Library had a hard time trying to get a bunch of bands to go to a club on their night off to drink free beer. They also offered free pizza and hot wings. Surprisingly enough there was a good turn out for The Library’s open house. If you didn’t catch it I was being facetious.
Truthfully, I felt a little awkward walking in The Library for my first time (with my band Achalachia) because we knew no one and really didn’t know what to do. We found our way to the bar to grab our first of many free cups of beer.
We proceeded to do what most other bands were doing, stand in a small circle of the people you know and not daring to talk outside of our bubble. Not really knowing what else to do, we drank our beers too fast and smoked too many cigarettes.
Eventually The Library’s gracious host arrived on the stage to thank everyone for coming out. She let everyone know there was plenty of free beer and food and encouraged us to eat and drink more. We happily observed her request. She also told us that there would be door prizes and are contact forms for booking, and asked everyone to fill one out. We filled out forms that almost seemed like job application and submitted our name for door prizes. Later that evening my bass player Nick won one of the door prizes, a gift card, and my Drummer Adam was given a pair of drumsticks from another band. And eventually we even began to mingle. It started to feel like some weird version of speed dating. Gather a bunch of people in a room and see who connects.
With liquid courage in hand we were comfortable enough to converse with a few other bands. One of which we had already been talking with on MySpace. We setup a few tentative shows with some of the bands and we’ll just have to wait and see if they actually happen.
The Library’s open house was only scheduled for two hours, and once things got moving time flew. It was over before we knew it and it took us over 15 minutes to actually leave the building because we kept getting caught in different conversations.
All in all I thought it was a brilliant idea for The Library to hold an open house for the people that will provide the entertainment. They both need each other. The bands need a place to play their music this is not only cool but also a place the fans will go. While The Library needs bands to play and bring beer-drinking fans so they can keep their lights on.
The Library in Soulard is the one of the newest music venues to hit Soulard. Originally Cruisin’ RTE 66 in South County, when the lease expired they decided to make a change by moving everything and everyone to the old Historic Soulard Library.
The Library is located in Historic Soulard in what was originally the Soulard branch of the St. Louis Public Library. The owners have restored the building but maintained the historic value and feel of this amazing building. The venue has a true rock feel with a large stage and open room with a bar. There is an upper loft area with a second bar and more seating for people who want to enjoy the food.

Washington, MO Fall Festival of the Arts and Crafts
Posted by John Nemec in My Boring Life on September 29th, 2009
Every time my wife and I try to plan some fun event we get defeated by the weather. No matter what the occasion is or whom we are with it never fails, the weather is wrong.
A while back we tried to set up a nice evening of burning some wood and roasting some Smores. The entire week was cool and in the evenings it was borderline cold. But the evening of the Smores it was a cool 95 degrees after sunset. And let me tell you, there is nothing better than sweating next to a roaring fire in 95-degree shade. The evening went off without a single complaint, but I’m sure our guests would have rather had been back home in their nice cool air-conditioning. And I’ll be surprised if they ever come over for another fun evening by the fire.
A more recent example is for months we have been planning a trip to the Washington, MO Fall Festival of the Arts and Crafts. We invited the same couple that came to our 95 degree marshmallow roasting.
The week prior to the art event we started talking it up to everyone and inviting anyone that showed any interest. We talked about all the great booths and wonderful weather from previous years. I told everyone that would listen about the beer tent that gave out a complementary collectors edition glass that you could drink out of and bring home! I still use the glass to this day. I bragged about the great food samples you can get at each booth, and all the different salsa’s, hot sauces, and jalapeno jellies you could handle.
When the day finally arrived we had a small group of people prepared to go, but half of them looked out their window that morning and decided not to go. Off to the west was a horrible looking storm cloud just waiting for us to leave the house.
We decided to wait a few hours to see if the storm would finally come and pass, but by noon there was still no rain and we decided to brave it and go to the festival. As soon as we walked out the door to head out the first drops of rain started falling.
Stubborn and determined to go we decided to go anyway. We packed up the car and headed out and drove the 45 minutes to Washington, MO. By the time we got there, with only the Smores couple, the weather had cleared and it looked to be an enjoyable day.

My son and I at the Washington, MO Fall Festival of the Arts and Crafts
We walked around and saw the sights. A few new ones like the Jasbo’s Salsa stand and the 1920s style women’s hats. And a few old ones like Cowboy Chris’ Buffalo Wing Sauce stand and The Gorde Guy, a guy that makes art out of gordes. To my disappointment there were no complementary collectors glasses at the beer stand, so I settled for the plastic Bud Light cup.
When we had seen a good amount of kitschy arts and crafts we decided to go get some pie at Cowan’s Cafe. In my opinion, it’s some of the best pie I’ve ever had. I’m normally not a big pie fan but this pie is great. They also sell food there, but again in my opinion, it’s nothing to write home to mom about.
After our pie we decided to wander a bit longer but by the time we reached the end of the street we saw another huge storm cloud on its way in. The lady at the beer tent said they were closing up shop because of the sever weather, that was my tip to pack up my family and go home. We said goodbye to our friends, packed up our stuff and raced to the car to try and beat the rain.
As soon as we got in the car the sky’s opened up and it started too poor. I had a few too many beers to drive so my wife took the wheel. We made it home safely, but it made me think. Either I have the worst timing when it comes to planning things or someone doesn’t want me to have a good time. The weather is always the opposite of what it should be. Murphy’s Law, Karma, or some Supreme Being; whatever it is, I wish it would leave me alone, I do just fine at screwing up my own plans, I don’t need any help.

Starbucks Wi-Fi
Posted by John Nemec in My Boring Life on September 28th, 2009
I‘ve always heard about the Free Wi-Fi at Starbucks, it seemed to me it was one of their top selling points next to their coffee. Come to Starbucks, get a coffee, some sort of pastries, and enjoy our Free WiFi. Well, as I’m typing this in Starbucks I can’t connect to the internet. I bought my coffee, I’m sitting in they’re store, but I can’t connect. They want me to pay $3.99 for 2 hours of time. I don’t know about you but that doesn’t sound like Free to me. Maybe I’m wrong or just misinformed, but I thought Starbucks offed free Wi-Fi.
I found out about my horrible disconnect when I tried to log into my admin area to write a post about my trip to Washington, MO(see tomorrows post). I found a free, unsecure Wi-Fi connection but low and behold, I can’t connect to anything but the “Pay Me For WiFi Starbucks Page”. Bummer. Serves me right for trying to go get work done outside of my house.
I did find a section on the Starbucks site that says if you have an iPhone or AT&T U-Verse Service you can connect. I have both but can’t connect using either link. Maybe I need the internet to access the pages, but it seems to me that they are dead links.
Luckily I can still get some work done while I sit here by typing into Microsoft Word, and can just queue the posts up this evening when I get home. And Starbucks will stay just a normal overpriced, but good, coffee house that is nice to sit in if you like listening to the Beatles.
After getting home a doing a little more research, I found that the Free Wi-Fi is actually only 2 free hours a month with a registered Starbucks Card. On the same page I found a few more pieces of information about free Wi-Fi for AT&T customers but no link or way of finding out more.
Either way, free or paid, I will continue to visit Starbucks multiple times a week for the only reason I ever go back to Starbucks for, their coffee. I’m sure it’s not the greatest coffee in the world and it’s definitely not the cheapest, but I enjoy it and I will gladly pay $2.15 for a large black Starbucks coffee.
